so because ADK offers something that no other mic company does, that is open architecture and offering the ability to mod and update any ADK mic at the Custom Shop (located in Federal Way, WA) I took advantage of that.

I purchased a set of used A51S LE edition microphones and because I got such a great deal on them, I wanted to put some money into one and see if I could take JP's approach and make a great mic better by swapping out parts here and there.

I sent it in to the CS and had them upgrade the circuit to Hamburg specs using nice quality capacitors like Wima, and was thoroughly impressed at the jump in quality, as well as a nice change of color to have at my disposal.

Since the upgrade was fairly inexpensive, I decided to take it a bit further taking notes from the Hamburg II's specs. I purchased a Lundahl LL1550 output transformer (and with a little help from JP and Kevin as to the most desirable way to wire it seeing as this particular tranny can be wired a number of different ways), I replaced the small Chinese transformer with a nice amorphous core tranny from Sweden!

The sound of this upgrade was very noticable! MUCH cleaner lows (less flubby esp. at higher SPL's) and smoother high end response.

Ultimately I will also be putting in my new fav capsule, the ADK GK-67 (same as in the Hamburg II in fact) as I put one in my TC and am VERY happy with the results. I also am looking at getting better electrolytic caps to replace the unlabeled ones to see if that can improve anything. I still am drooling of the hamburg II and feel that although very similar in general tone, ive simply created ANOTHER flavor to use, which was my goal.

So everyone can see/hear what iIve done, I will be posting samples of the audio very soon on hearthegear.com, and posting pictures in this thread of innerds for your perusal.

MUCH THANKS TO ADK FOR BEING SO GREAT!
